Bulgarian Cultural Institute London is happy to invite you to the presentation of the long-awaited new novel by the famous Bulgarian writer and playwright Teodora Dimova “THE DEFEATED” on December 05, 2020, from 19:00, at the “Sofia” Gallery.

SUMMARY

The “Defeated” by Teodora Dimova takes us back to one of the dark periods in Bulgarian history – immediately after the events of September 9, 1944, when many were defeated by the totalitarian regime established by the Soviet occupation after the coup.

February 1, 2016 was a frosty day.

I was at the memorial in front of the monument to the victims of communism in the garden of the National Palace of Culture. We couldn’t stay in one place for long, our breath came out like steam. In front of the monument were about two hundred people wrapped in scarves. I had frozen myself.

There were no government officials.

It was like a private memorial service. It was as if the victims had nothing to do with our country. It seems that we have become more comfortable living without memory. I felt heavy on the icy, crystal clear February morning.

– Excerpt from the afterword in the book “The Defeated”.
