Following the revolutions which unfolded in Central and Eastern Europe in 1989, for
the first time since the end of the Second World War, free, multiparty democratic
elections were held, opening new dialogues about governance, sovereignty,
international cooperation, market reform, and environmental awareness.
To mark the 35th anniversary of the start of this process, a high-level panel discussion
is organised bringing together ambassadors from the region, moderated by the Centre
for European Reform. This event draws attention to that pivotal moment in history and
geography—what was achieved then, and what is at stake now. It serves as a
reminder of the shared values that unite us and the respect of democracy.
Following the panel event, participants will be invited to the private viewing of the
‘Come With Us!’ exhibition, devoted to the same moment in European history. The
exhibition transports us back to this pivotal moment in European history — one that
forever changed the fate of our continent — and reflects on the political
transformations that followed. It brings together a unique display of political posters
and iconic visuals with contributions from twelve countries—Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech
Republic, Estonia, Germany, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia
and Slovenia.
The event is co-hosted by the Delegation of the European Union to the United Kingdom and the European Parliament Liaison Office in the United Kingdom.
